I posted a couple of months ago about my desire to remove Google from my life as much as I could. I’ve made some progress and so here is an update.
Service | Alternative | Notes |
---|---|---|
Android Auto | tbd | Avoid using it. Scary set of data being stored. |
Android OS | tbd | Need a new non-Android phone. No update on this. |
Calendar | Tuta | Switched off my Google calendar and using my Tuta account only now. |
Contacts | Tuta | Using Tuta only for this too |
Docs | Paperless | Need to migrate my docs and then stop using it |
Drive | File Browser | I installed FileBrowser and I’m very happy with it. |
Gmail | Tuta | I am committed to using Tuta for email and calendar for the next year. So far? So great! |
Google Maps | tbd | OpenStreetMap and others are OK but don’t have the business data. This is going to be the hardest thing to give up. No update here yet. |
Google Photos | Immich | Already using Immich. Love it. Self-Hosting, baby! |
Google Play | F-Droid | Already stopped pulling apps from their store. |
Translate | DeepL | Ditched Google Translate and happy about that. |
YouTube | PeerTube, Invidious | I am using those other services when I can, but I still need to cut myself off entirely next. |
YouTube Music | Spotify / local music | Local music collection for the win. Using Navidrome to play form it, but I need to find an alternative which supports folders still next since not all of my 50GB collection is tagged correctly. |
Podcasts | AudioBookshelf | AudioBookshelf rules for this. Self-hosting and loving it. |
I still need to find a way to have a mobile phone without Google but that seems like the most difficult step. Anyone reading this with ideas, please let me know!
